We promise not to bombarde you with too much stuff.  In the meantime we will be adding things of interest in this part of Maverick Minds website.

January 2010

Happy New Year and Maverick Minds wishes everyone a fulfilling and creative year.

One event you must get along to the is APT6.  The 6th Asia Pacific Triennial featured at the Gallery of Modern Art and Queensland Art Gallery.  The exhibition comprises of 100 artists from 25 countries.  The scope is far greater with work featured from countries along the Mekong and also the Middle East.  It is a diverse show and features some very large scale works such as Subodh Gupta's Line of Control and Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian stunning glass mosaic Lighting for Neda, and Pixcell Elk2 by Japanese artist Kohei Nawa, and 'funky' buddhas by Gonkar Gyatso.

All the work has a wonderful aesthetic quality.  It is easy in some instances to be seduced by the scale, beauty and bling that some of these works offer.  And yet there are deeper messages running through all of these works.  That is what artists do - artists take ideas and materials and rework them in ways that provide the viewer with the opportunity to question, see things differently and delve into conversations that through conventional channels may be too difficult.  So go and be challenged and take the time to look a little deeper at the work on display at the gallery.

November 2009

Maverick Minds had the opportunity to hear British artist Andy Goldsworthy speak at the Gallery of Modern Art recently.  The sculptor, photographer and environmentalist talked about his recent work.  Having seen a major exhibition of the artist's work at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park a couple of years ago, it was a privilege to hear him in person.  Incredibly articulate and humble I greatly appreciated the insights into how the artist works and thinks.  Again it highlighted to me how much we can learn from artists in the way they approach their work and what we can learn from looking at things in a different way.
